Measuring Your Area
All lawn areas can be divided up into various common shapes. It is then easy to estimate your lawn requirements using the following formulas.
Measuring a Rectangle
~ To measure the area of a rectangle or square just measure the width (A) by the height (B) 8m x 4m = 32 square meters
Measuring a Triangle
~ To measure the area of a triangle multiply the height (A) by the base (B) divide by 2.4m x2m = 8 square meters
Measuring a Circle
~ To measure the area of a circle measure the radius (or diameter divided by 2) by itself then by 3.14 6m x 3.14 = 113 square meters
Step 1 ~ Measuring
With a measuring tape, measure in meters your planned area and then use the formula LxW=m2 to work out how many square meters you need. Prompt installation on the day of pick up, or delivery, is crucial for a strong beginning for your lawn.
Step 2 ~ Soil Preparation
For best results, rotary hoe or spade the area to a depth of 10-15cm (4-6 inches). Eliminate any drainage problems by having soil slope away from your home. Spread Soil & Stone Factory’s Under turf Blend to a depth of 5-10cm (2-3 inches), rake out until level and then roll with a roller. After this is done it will reveal low areas that will need more soil. Keep soil 1-2 cm (0.5 inches) below edging or driveway, this will make your turf flush when it is installed.
Step 3 ~ Turf Installation
Spread out lawn starter fertilizer on your under turf blend, no need to be raked. Spread approximately on handful per square meter over the prepared area to help establish the root system of your newly laid lawn. A wetting agent can also be applied to assist with water retention at this stage.
If you are installing a sprinkler system, install it after soil preparation at the desired height. Water the area to settle the soil and provide a moist base for laying your instant lawn.
Install your lawn immediately upon delivery. It is important to water within 30 minutes of installation. Turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to survive!
Begin installing turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or footpath. Push each roll firmly together (without stretching), laying in a brickwork pattern. Avoid gaps and overlaps. Use a sharp knife to trim corners etc. Avoid leaving small strips at outer edges as they will not retain moisture. On slopes, place the turf pieces across the slope.
For warm season grasses such as Couch & Soft Leaf Buffalo, the Soil & Stone Factory Top Dressing Blend is also beneficial. This will help retain moisture and smooth out any cracks or gaps in the roll.
Step 4 ~ Watering
Give your lawn at least 2-3cm (1 inch) of water within half an hour of installation. Water daily, (two or three times in the first few days) keeping turf moist until it is firmly rooted (approximately 3 weeks). Then less frequent and deeper watering should begin in order to encourage a stronger deeper root system.
